World Documentary was a film and TV conference held for the first time in 2014 at Falmouth University.
The event was designed to showcase international documentaries and to provide a forum for an academic debate on the global past, present, and future of factual films and TV. It was important to establish a strong identity and a successful marketing strategy for the event to ensure good attendance and solid quality of academic and film industry speakers. World Documentary became one of the most successful conferences ever held by Falmouth University, attracting high-profile speakers from around the globe.
Falmouth University came to us with the aim of promoting their new conference to a specialist international audience.
The interface solution needed to provide a visual identity for the conference, enable participants to submit proposals and book their tickets/accommodation online as well as facilitate event scheduling.
In addition, the organisers expressed their desire to create a platform for showcasing student’s film work and to promote the School of Film & Television, one of the largest departments at Falmouth University.
Dots+Circles produced a unique identity for World Documentary, mimicking production lighting and taking influences from both western and non-western cultures to establish a sense of balance and cross-cultural unity.
We selected the best Falmouth University student documentary film work to provide an online showcase for our client with an integrated online film player.
The website was constructed to offer a consistent experience across devices and to be scalable in order to facilitate post-event content sharing and related future events.
Leading the development of supporting print media and paper-based advertising, Dots+Circles went beyond just brand and website creation. We designed and produced leaflets, posters and conference programme packs to support the delivery of the event.
Finally, we worked on managing an advertising campaign for the conference in online media journals/forums and social media. We also created and sent personal invitations to film studios, distributors and heads of departments at relevant academic institutions.
Dots+Circles worked in close conjunction with the School of Film & Television lecturers to produce striking visual branding, an adaptable website and an effective advertising campaign on a tight public-sector budget.
In the leadup to the event the World Documentary website was visited from 116 countries across all continents which in turn lead to high quality international submissions.
The event attracted numerous high-profile film distributors, academics, and documentary film directors. It was attended by over 100 participants from all over the globe, including many from countries as far afield as Brazil, South Africa, and Algeria.
Dots+Circles did an absolutely stunning job with our website, posters and programmes. Plenty of compliments from world-class academics and general public with words, such as ‘gorgeous’, ‘elegant’, ‘super-functional,’ and ‘marvellous’.
Two of our keynote speakers even expressed their admiration for the website design and branding before their talks! The site was a major publicity pull and made our well-attended event a great success.
